Chasing the target, India made a steady start. Rohit and Shubman Gill added 30 runs for the first wicket. Gill became the victim of Ben Dwarshuis in the fifth over after scoring 8 runs. Rohit added 28 runs in 29 balls with the help of three fours and a six. He was dismissed LBW by Cooper Connolly in the eighth over. In such a situation, star batsman Kohli took charge. He shared an important partnership of 91 runs for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer.

However, Iyer, who was in good rhythm, missed the fifty. He scored 45 runs in 62 balls with the help of three fours. He was bowled by Adam Jampa in the 27th over. Kohli completed the 74th half-century of his ODI career in 53 balls. He added 44 runs for the fourth wicket with Axar Patel (27 off 30 balls). Nathan Ellis bowled Axar in the 35th over.

After India lost four wickets for 178 runs, the Kangaroos tried to dominate but Kohli took the innings forward well with KL Rahul. Both of them shared a 47-run partnership for the fifth wicket. After Kohli left, Rahul stayed till the end. He shared a 34-run partnership with Hardik Pandya (28 off 24 balls, one four, three sixes).

IND vs AUS: Earlier, the Indian bowlers performed disciplined but Australia scored 264 runs in 49.3 overs on the basis of half-centuries from Steve Smith and Alex Carey. Australian captain Smith won the toss and batted first and scored 73 runs in 96 balls with the help of four fours and a six. However, the batsmen could not take much advantage of the favorable pitch and kept losing wickets by playing irresponsible shots. Smith was the architect of the Australian innings, who made three half-century partnerships. He added 52 for the second wicket with Travis Head, 56 for the third wicket with Marnus Labuschagne and 54 for the fifth wicket with Carey.

Carey scored 61 runs in 57 balls which included eight fours and a six. Head, who often proved to be a headache for the Indian team, got many lives which he could not take advantage of and returned after scoring 39 runs. On the very first ball of the match, Mohammad Shami dropped his return catch, then he escaped being run out and twice the ball missed the stumps by a narrow margin.

Head hit some spectacular shots, including a six to Hardik Pandya and three consecutive fours to Shami. This also helped Australia recover from the initial setbacks. Cooper Connolly, who started the innings with Head, was out early. Connolly got a place in the team due to Matthew Short’s injury. Spinner Varun Chakraborty, who took five wickets against New Zealand in the last match, sent Head off. Shubman Gill caught his catch in the deep while running. Labuschagne was declared LBW by Ravindra Jadeja.

At the same time, Josh Inglis got caught by Virat Kohli at short covers on Jadeja’s ball. Smith continued to score runs from the other end and hit a straight six to Jadeja. He missed Shami’s full-toss ball and the ball hit his stumps. When Glenn Maxwell came to the crease, 13 overs were left and Australia’s score was 198 runs for five wickets. He had this golden opportunity but he got out on the ball of Akshar Patel and left without reaching double figures. Carey added 34 runs for the seventh wicket with Ben Dwarshuis, which helped Australia cross 250. He got run out on the accurate throw of Shreyas Iyer while trying to take the second run.
