Champions Trophy: Australia won the toss in the semi -finals of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against the Indian team and decided to bat first. Team India captain Rohit Sharma came with a black band during the toss, while the entire team also did so. Actually, Indian players were paying tribute to Mumbai’s great spinner Padmakar Shivalkar.

Padmakar Shivalkar died a day earlier at the age of 84. Shivalkar, one of the best spinners who never played for team India, participated in a total of 124 first-class matches between 1961-62 and 1987-88 and took 589 wickets at an average of 19.69.
Champions Trophy : He was awarded the CK Naidu ‘Lifetime Achievement’ Award by the Indian team Cricket Board in 2017. Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) president Ajinkya Naik said, “Mumbai cricket has lost a true veteran today. Padmakar Shivalkar Sir’s contribution to the game will always be remembered as one of the best spinners ever. ”He said,“ His dedication, skills and influence on Mumbai cricket are unique. His death is an irreparable loss to the cricket world. may his soul rest in peace.’
Champions Trophy : Sunil Gavaskar had said- Padmakar Shivalkar was entitled to play in Indian team
The great Sunil Gavaskar, while paying homage to Padmakar Shivalkar, said that ‘some were more entitled to play in the Indian team than others’. Left -arm spinner Shivalkar was one of the best spinners in the country who never got a chance to play for the national team. He died here on Monday due to age related problems. Gavaskar wrote an emotional message on the death of Shivalkar. A few days before Shivalkar’s death, former Mumbai captain and chief selector Milind Rege also died on February 19 after death.
Padmakar Shivalkar’s cricket career
Shivalkar made his Ranji Trophy debut at the age of 22 and kept playing till the age of 48. His first class career lasted from 1961–62 to 1987-88 session. He played a total of 124 first class matches and took 589 wickets at an average of 19.60, out of which 361 wickets came in the Ranji Trophy
