Former Team India coach Ravi Shastri and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting have even said that if Bumrah does not play the Champions Trophy, Team India’s chances of winning this tournament will be reduced by 30-35 percent.
Ravi Shastri, while talking to ICC, said, ‘I think this is a big risk. At this stage of his career, I think he is so valuable that even if he is suddenly called for a game and asked to perform well, there will be a lot of expectations. They will think that Bumrah will come immediately and set the world on fire. It is not so easy when you return from injury.’
Chances of winning will be reduced by 30%
Shastri also stressed how important Bumrah is for India to win the Champions Trophy. He said that his absence will be a big blow to the team’s plans. He said, ‘Bumrah not being fit will reduce India’s chances of winning the Champions Trophy by 30%, maybe 30-35%. With a fully fit Bumrah playing, you get guaranteed death overs. It would have been a completely different game.’
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said that Bumrah’s workload in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has led to his injury. Ponting believes that now all the attention is focused on Mohammed Shami, who has returned after his injury and played in India’s recent limited overs series against England.
